The Committed Leader: How the Class of 2027 Can Set the Standard

September 1st has already passed for the class of 2027, and it was a massive milestone for many of you. For those who have already found their future homes and made their commitments, it might feel like the hard part is over. But the truth is, your journey is just changing shape. You are no longer just a high school player; you are now a brand ambassador for your future college program. This spring season, you have a unique opportunity to use your position to influence the culture of your team and become a role model for the younger athletes following in your footsteps.
Being a "committed leader" means killing the "I'm done" mentality before it starts. It can be tempting to coast once you’ve secured your spot, but the best recruits use their commitment as a starting line, not a finish line. Show the freshmen and sophomores what it looks like to show up early and stay late. By maintaining your intensity, you’re proving to your future coaches, and your current teammates, that your work ethic isn't conditional on a commitment. You’ve reached the goal they are all striving for, so show them exactly what the standard looks like.
Beyond your play, use your experience to mentor the next in line. You just navigated the chaos of the recruiting cycle, the emails, and the phone calls. You can be a huge asset to a sophomore who is currently feeling the stress of the "unknown." Share your notes, help them draft their first outreach email, or simply offer a listening ear. When the season gets long and the team gets frustrated, your voice will carry the most weight. Use it to keep the energy positive and the standards high. You’ve secured your future, now, help your teammates secure theirs.
